New MP Sworn In, Nepal Condolences Expressed

When Parliament resumed Speaker David Carter said he had received a writ declaring Winston Peters to be the elected MP for Northland.

Mr Carter said Mr Peters had also resigned as a list MP for NZ First and Ria Bond was therefore elected as an MP as the next person on the party list. Ms Bond was then sworn in as an MP.

MPs held a period of silence marking the death of two former MPs.

Acting Prime Minister Bill English moved a motion for Parliament to express its support and condolences to the people and Government of Nepal following the destructive earthquake there. Mr English said the loss of life and destruction was immense and New Zealand stood ready to assist in the short term and the coming years as this country knew well the difficulties in recovering from such a disaster.

Labour’s Deputy Leader Annette King supported the motion, but said the Government should not wait for requests for assistance, but should make further contributions as more could be done to help.

The motion passed on a voice vote.

Labour Annette King said the House would want to wish former Prime Minister and current Ambassador to Washington Mike Moore a speedy recovery after a stroke. Deputy Leader of the House Simon Bridges said National agreed with the sentiment.

The Draft Annual Plan of the Auditor-General was presented.
