The Employment Relations (Workers’ Secret Ballot for Strikes) Amendment Bill passed its second reading by 64 votes to 53
MPs held the first reading debate on the Animal Welfare (Treatment of Animals) Amendment Bill.
The bill was voted down by 62 to 56 with National and ACT opposing.
The purpose of the bill was to amend the Animal Welfare Act to phase out the exception in section 23 of the Act.
This section allows practices such as caging farm animals, which do not meet best practice standards as set out in the Act, to continue.
The bill’s sponsor Sue Kedgley asked for a personal vote to be recorded but the Assistant Speaker ruled against this saying a personal vote would not make any difference to the vote, which had not been close anyway.
