Parliament powered through members’ bills on Wednesday evening freeing up places for new bills from the ballot.

The Shop Trading Hours Act Repeal (Waitaki Easter Trading) Amendment Bill in the name of Jacqui Dean was defeated in a personal vote by 49 to 70.

The purpose of this bill was to allow all retailers within districts covered by the Waitaki Electorate to trade on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Debate was interrupted on the first reading of the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and Anzac Day) Amendment Bill

This bill provides for public holidays on Mondays when Waitangi Day or ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
Earlier the Depleted Uranium (Prohibition) Bill failed to complete its first reading on a tied vote and the Fair Trading (Soliciting on Behalf of Charities) Amendment Bill passed its third reading on a voice vote.
