SOE Sale Debate To Dominate

by Desk Editor on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 — 10:40 AM

Debate on the partial sale of the energy state owned enterprises is set to dominate the House today.

After Question Time, MPs are scheduled to debate the committee stage of the Mixed Ownership Model Bill.

This bill sets up the sale of up to 49 percent of Genesis Power, Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power and Solid Energy.
While the bill is not a long one, it is strongly opposed by all parties outside National, ACT and United Future.

The MOM Bill was amended in select committee mainly in an attempt to tighten restrictions from the Crown holding less than 51 percent of the voting rights in each of the companies and restricting anyone outside the Crown holding more than 10 percent of the voting rights in each of the companies.

Opposition MPs have already tabled many suggested amendments and more are expected.
