Longer than usual debate on local bills meant that Parliament did not get to vote on whether to “Mondayise’’ Anzac Day and Waitangi Day on Wednesday night.
Despite National MPs taking short calls, the House rose interrupting the second reading debate on Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day) Amendment Bill
National opposed this bill, but opposition parties managed to get the bill to select committee with the support of Peter Dunne and the Maori Party.
David Clark said today he thanked other parties for their support and said all MPs outside National and Act had pledged to support the bill
The bill had come out of select committee with only cosmetic changes and a survey of the business community found 87 percent of respondents were in favour or neutral about the bill, he said.
He said the bill would occasionally give “hard working kiwis’’ the chance of some extra time with their families.
Earlier the Habeas Corpus Amendment Bill passed its second reading by 112 to 7 with NZ First opposing.
Opposition MPs agreed with the bill but were angry that it was a member’s bill eating into the time available for such legislation.
