Holidays Bill Progresses

A bill which would result in a holiday being taken on a Monday when Anzac Day and Waitangi Day fall on a weekend has just one more hurdle to pass.

David Clark said he welcomed the support of all MPs outside National and ACT to ensure the passage of the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day) Amendment Bill.

Having a public holiday on a Monday when Anzac Day or Waitangi Day fell on a weekend was common sense and supported by the majority of New Zealanders, he said.

National’s Mark Sabin said he respected the view of the parties who supported the bill, but it was a finally balanced decision and National had taken the view that both of the holidays needed respect.

Debate on the bill was taken as one part and it completed its committee reading on a voice vote.

MPs then began the committee stage of the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill.

Earlier in the afternoon Habeas Corpus Amendment Bill completed its third reading by 114 to 7 with NZ First opposed.
