Marriage & Monday Holidays Bill Set To Pass

by Desk Editor on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 — 10:03 AM

A bill allowing same sex couples to marry is likely to pass into law this evening.

Today in Parliament is a members day and after Question Time and the General Debate, MPs will debate the third reading of the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day) Amendment Bill.

The bill will mean that when Waitangi Day or ANZAC day fall on a weekend a public holiday will be observed on the Monday. This is likely to pass as only National and ACT oppose it.

This will be followed by the third reading of the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill. Voting on this is likely sometime around 9.30pm.

All indications point to it retaining the support a majority of MPs for the conscience vote.
