MPs will today debate legislation proposing the largest reform of the public sector in more than 20 years.

After Question Time, MPs are due to complete the interrupted third reading of the Local Electoral Amendment Bill (No 2), this will be followed by the second reading debate of the State Sector and Public Finance Reform Bill.

The bill was reported back from select committee with a number of changes, particularly in the areas of employment contracts and industrial relations.

These changes were enough to ensure Labour’s indication of support for the bill

Amongst other things, the bill allows for new governance structures within the public service.

This will be followed by the second reading debates on the Resource Management Reform Bill and Public Finance (Fiscal Responsibility) Amendment Bill.
