When the House resumed at 2pm Prime Minister John Key moved a motion noting New Zealand’s successful bid on the United Nation’s Security Council.

Key said the long bi-partisan campaign had shown the high regard New Zealand was held on the international stage and what a positive difference a small country could achieve on the international stage.

The motion passed on a voice vote.

Key moved a motion noting with sadness the death of former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. The motion also passed on a voice vote.

MPs then began the 19 hour debate in reply to the Speech from the Throne.

New National list MP Chris Bishop took first spot and made his maiden speech. He was followed by new National Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger.

The debate continued with Labour’s acting Deputy Leader Annette King moving a motion of no-confidence in the Government.

During the debate new ACT MP David Seymour also made his maiden speech. The House adjourned for dinner and will resume at 7.30.
