Three parole related bills completed their second reading stages today.
The Public Safety (Public Protection Orders) Bill and Parole (Extended Supervision Orders) Amendment Bill were taken together as cognate bills and completed their second reading by 107 to 14 with the Greens opposing as the bill breached the Bill of Rights Act
Justice Minister Amy Adams said the Government had regained control on law and Order through various actions and crime was at a 30 year low. The bills would help protect the public from a small number of serious offenders who posed a risk to society when they were released from prison.
The orders proposed by the bill would allow for greater supervision of a small number of high risk offenders.
The Government would be introducing more amendment in the committee stage including the restriction of those under the order from contact with children.
Labour’s Jacinda Ardern said the bill would plug some gaps in the system for dealing with people who are to be released from prison but are still a threat to society.
After this the Parole Amendment Bill completed its committee stage by 105 to 16 with Greens and Maori Party opposing.
After Question Time and the General Debate, MPs completed the interrupted second reading debate of the Education Amendment Bill (No. 2) by 62 to 59 with National, United Future and ACT supporting.
