Justice Bill Next Week And Speaker To Reflect

by Desk Editor on Thursday, February 19, 2015 — 2:27 PM

The Government will give priority to a justice bill next week and the Speaker says he will reflect on a ruling last night in regards to appointments to the Intelligence and Security Committee.

When the House resumed at 2pm the Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee said next week the Government would progress legislation including the Drug and Alcohol Testing of Community-based Offenders and Bailees Legislation Bill and the Statutes Amendment Bill.

Wednesday would most likely be a Members Day, he said.

Also before Question time Green MP James Shaw asked the Speaker to further consider his ruling he could not intervene in the nominations of membership to the Intelligence and Security Council even if there had not been consultation as required under statute (See earlier story).

Mr Brownlee said there was a difference between someone having been unhappy about a level of consultation and no consultation.

Speaker David Carter said he would reflect upon the issue, but said he had seen media reports which indicated differences about the level of consultation.

The Auditor-General’s report, Response of the New Zealand Police to the Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct: Fourth monitoring report, was presented as were reports from the Health Committee on the:
