EEZ Bill Gets Wide Support

by Desk Editor on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 — 8:00 PM

The interrupted second reading of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) (Transitional Provisions) Amendment Bill was completed on a voice vote.

The main purpose of the bill is to allow the Maui gas field to continue operating while its marine consent is processed.

There are four gas and oil operations in the EEZ off the Taranaki coast including Shell Todd Oil Service’s Maui gas platforms whose current license may expire before a current marine consent application is completed.

The STOS consent has been approved but appeals may push a conclusion past the expiration of the current license at the end of June.

MPs then began the committee stage of Social Assistance (Portability to Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau) Bill.
