ACT MP David Garrett’s Crimes (Reasonable Parental Control and Correction) Amendment Bill was voted down with no other party supporting it.

The purpose of the bill was to repeal and replace section 59 of the Crimes Act 1961 which lays out defences for assaulting a child. Mr Garrett had proposed extending the circumstances in which a parent could be found not guilty of assault.
