Earthquake Recovery Authority Bill And Urgency

The Government has indicated that it will today introduce legislation setting up the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said the bill would be passed under Urgency this week so the rebuilding of Christchurch could start as quickly as possible.

The authority will lead and co-ordinate the recovery effort in Canterbury and the bill would give it powers to relax, suspend or extend laws and regulations.

It is expected the bill will undergo a short constrained select committee process.
