Clothes Make The Woman

Speaker Lockwood Smith today ejected Labour MP Clare Curran from the House for wearing an old Highlanders rugby jersey.

The Dunedin South MP was wearing the shirt in protest at the rugby team’s decision to changes from a blue, gold and maroon colours to a lime green colour.

Dr Smith said it did not meet Parliament’s dress code.

Male MPs must wear a tie or jacket buttoned up to the neck. Women must wear ”normal business attire”.
