House Goes Into Urgency

The House has gone into Urgency to pass a law validating speed limits set by local councils.

Leader of the House Gerry Bronwlee said the Land Transport (Speed Limits Validation and Other Matters) Bill would confirm the validity of speed limits and enforcement going back to 2004. He said the bill would retrospectively validate local bodies right to set and enforce road speed limits.

The Land Transport (Speed Limits Validation and Other Matters) Bill validates all speed limit bylaws made by various road controlling authorities. Recent information has suggested some road controlling authorities may have made speed limit bylaws under powers that may not have been available to them, or have omitted to comply fully with their bylaw-making powers. The Bill validates all speed limit bylaws and confirms they were made correctly under land transport legislation.

There was no objection to the Urgency Motion.
