Church Bill Sent To Select Committee

A private bill concerning the governance of a churches trust has been sent to select committee.

The Christian Churches New Zealand Property Trust Board Empowering Bill dissolves the Associated Churches of Christ Church Extension and Property Trust Board and vesting its interests and obligations to the Christian Churches New Zealand Property Trust Board.

The bill’s sponsor Nick Smith said it would allow the churches to modernise their property trust which had been formed in the early 1800s. The churches had done much to help their communities but the 85 year old Act which they worked under was outdated.

The bill was sent to the Government and Administration Committee for consideration on a voice vote and MPs began the first reading of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Extended licensing hours during Rugby World Cup) Bill.
